Directions

Directions by road

  • From the A34 (Southbound) – Exit the A34 at the Chilton junction, signposted Harwell Campus and Chilton. At the top of the slip road, turn right (second exit) onto Hagbourne Hill. At the next roundabout, take the third exit onto A4185. After going over the A34, go straight ahead at the next roundabout, remaining on the A4185. At the next roundabout take the first exit onto Fermi Avenue (signposted Harwell Campus, Fermi Entrance, Diamond, HPA, RAL). At the next roundabout, take the first exit and go straight on at the following roundabout. Entrance to the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory is on the left hand side after the circular Diamond Light Source building
  • From the A34 (Northbound) – Exit the A34 at Chilton Junction, branch left (signposted, Wantage), then merge onto the A4185. At the next roundabout take the 1st exit (signposted Harwell Campus Fermi Entrance, Diamond, HPA, RAL). Go straight across two mini roundabouts and the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory can be found on the left hand side after the Diamond Light Source building.
  • From Heathrow Airport – Take the M4 motorway towards Slough, Reading and the West. Continue as far as junction 13 and then head North for about 8 miles on the A34 towards Oxford and follow the A34 directions given above.
  • From Gatwick Airport – Take the M23 to London and Guildford. At junction 7/8 join the M25 to Heathrow and Watford. At junction 15, take the M4 towards Slough, Reading and the West, and continue to junction 13. Head North for about 8 miles on the A34 towards Oxford and follow the A34 directions given above.

There are three posts (six bays) at the entrance to the South Car Park. The two posts (four bays) at Main reception are intended for visitors.

By train

  • Didcot Parkway is the closest railway station to Harwell Campus. It is then a short onward journey to get to Harwell Campus, whether by bus, taxi or bike.

Six bus services serve Harwell Campus:

  • From Didcot: 94
  • From Oxford City Centre: ST1
  • From the John Radcliff Hospital (Oxford) via Wantage: X32
  • From Blewbury, Chilton, East and West Hagbourne: 94

The ST1 from Broad Street Oxford comes directly to Harwell Campus and RAL and takes about 34 mins.

The X32 from Oxford comes to Harwell Campus and RAL via Didcot and therefore takes 10 mins longer than the ST1.

Air Travel

RAL is about 55 minutes drive of London Heathrow. Taxis are available from outside the main arrivals hall. It is also possible to travel by train to Didcot Parkway Station, via London Paddington, and to take a taxi or bus to the campus.
